Dermal Fillers

As we age fat and connective tissue under the skin diminish and lose their integrity. Sagging and wrinkling develop.

Surgical facelift is costly, invasive, and presents with associated risks.

Dermal filler injections are minimally invasive with little or no recovery time. These products are far less expensive than surgery and minimal risks are encountered. This modality is emerging as a most popular option to address the aging process.

We can reverse wrinkles around the eyes, brows, bridge of the nose, mouth, jaw line, and cheeks. Fuller lips and reshaping outer lip corners can render a much younger and cheerful appearance. Scarring from injury or previous infections can also be corrected.

Types of dermal fillers include human collagen, hyaluronic acid, and donor tissue fat.

Each filler has advantages and disadvantages: Some last longer (not always advantageous), several are potentially allergenic, and necessary needle diameters will vary. Combinations of different fillers and/or adjunctive Botox or surgery may be considered for optimal results. We can formulate treatment plans in each case.

Bovine collagen was the first legally approved soft tissue augmentation agent in the United States. Since this substance is derived from domestic cattle mad cow disease and allergy are potential risks. Not used much anymore; human collagen and superior filling agents now available.

Human collagen and hyaluronic acids (Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane) do not require skin testing.

Hyaluronic acids bind to water; the combined molecular-water complexes fill spaces as needed. We offer these temporary (typically 6-9 months) augmentation agents at Vascular Epicenter. Please visit

Another nonpermanent option is calcium hydroxyapatite which degrades more slowly; therefore this product typically lasts longer.

Autologous fat is usually retrieved from the same person’s thighs, buttocks, flanks or abdomen by liposuction. Since Vascular Epicenter offers liposuction and perhaps in conjunction with our CoolTouch lipo laser we are particularly excited about using autologous fat transfer. Permanent or near-permanent improvements can be achieved.

Others: Poly-L-lactic acid, polymers, collagens, newer products undergoing research.

Common side effects: Bleeding, bruising, allergy (we do not offer fillers at Vascular Epicenter which require skin testing for potential allergy), superficial beading of overlying skin (epidermis), pain, redness. Ice and lidocaine will prevent or diminish many of these symptoms.
